What is gender swaying?
Gender swaying means using natural methods before conception, such as diet, timing and lifestyle, to try to increase your chances of conceiving a girl or a boy. It works with probabilities, and no method can guarantee the outcome. You can read more in What is Gender Swaying?
Does gender swaying actually work?
The evidence is consistent but not conclusive. Animal and human studies over nearly a century point in the same direction, and several studies report success rates of around 70-80% when mineral balance is adjusted before conception. Most human studies are small or observational and no large randomised trial exists, so swaying shifts the odds rather than determining the result. See Does diet affect baby gender?
Which gender swaying method has the strongest evidence?
Diet, specifically the balance of four minerals: calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Among all natural methods studied, dietary mineral balance has the strongest and most replicated scientific support. Timing-based methods have far weaker evidence. Our free guide to 30+ gender swaying methods compares them.
What should I eat to sway for a girl?
A girl sway aims for higher calcium and magnesium and lower sodium and potassium. It is the ratio between these minerals that matters, not the total amount of any single one. For example, almonds are a girl-swaying snack, while bananas lean towards a boy sway. Our Sway Factor colour-codes over 700 foods so you can see this at a glance.
What should I eat to sway for a boy?
A boy sway aims for higher potassium and sodium and lower calcium and magnesium. As with the girl sway, the balance between the minerals is what counts. Learn more in How to Conceive a Boy.
How long before trying to conceive should I start?
Around 10-12 weeks. That is roughly how long consistent dietary changes take to shift mineral levels in the blood and reproductive environment. Some women also choose a blood test at the start and after some weeks to check that their levels are moving in the right direction.
Does the Shettles timing method work?
Modern research has challenged it. A large 1995 study by Wilcox and colleagues in The New England Journal of Medicine found no link between the timing of intercourse and the sex of the baby, and later studies did not support the idea that X and Y sperm differ in speed or resilience. Can I just take supplements instead of changing my diet?
Supplements on their own are usually not enough. They can raise certain minerals, but they cannot lower the others, and lowering is just as important for getting the balance right. That is why our approach focuses on food first.
Is diet-based gender swaying safe?
Our food guides and meal plans were developed with fertility dietitians so that mineral adjustments do not compromise overall nutrition or fertility. The information is general guidance for people without underlying medical conditions. Always talk to your healthcare professional before making dietary or lifestyle changes, especially when trying to conceive.
Is gender swaying the same as sex selection?
No. Diet and lifestyle swaying is natural and non-invasive. It is completely different from medical procedures such as preimplantation genetic testing, which involves IVF and embryo selection.
What if I don't conceive the gender I hoped for?
That can happen, because no method is guaranteed. Feelings of gender disappointment are real and common, and you are not alone. We have written about it with care in What is gender disappointment?
Do mums really have success with gender swaying?
Yes, many do. Over the years, so many mums have shared with us that they conceived the girl or boy they hoped for. One mum, after having two boys, followed the Girl Sway Plan very closely for two to three months, tracked her mineral intake and used blood tests to check that her levels were moving in the right direction. She is now mum to a little girl and describes her daughter as the missing piece of their family puzzle. Read her story in Our Missing Piece: A Mum's Story of Swaying for Her Daughter.
Who is behind Sway natural?
Sway natural was founded by Julia Carless, PhD. After having her son, Julia hoped for a daughter, researched gender swaying in depth and built a database of over 250 scientific studies. For over a decade, Sway natural has successfully supported women around the world in their swaying journeys, with many going on to conceive their hoped-for gender. Read Julia's story.
What is the Sway Factor?
The Sway Factor is our colour-coded system for foods: pink for girl-swaying, blue for boy-swaying, green for neutral and black for mixed foods that need balancing. It turns complex mineral data into simple choices. Learn about the Sway Factor.
What is included in the Sway Plan?
Your Girl or Boy Sway Plan includes the full Sway Factor Tool, the full girl or boy swaying food guide, dietitian-designed meal plans, around 200 recipes and snacks, a meal plan builder, the Sway Tracker to help you stay on track, plus the Swaying Masterclass and Matrix, your personal action list, downloads and, if desired, access to community support. See Your Girl or Boy Sway Plan.
